Marking local history at Paddock Wood Community Centre

Paddock Wood Community Centre - Celebrating History
,

As a modern building on the Memorial Field, Paddock Wood Community Centre has quickly become a natural place for the town to gather and remember its history.

The Centre has a large plaque on the front exterior wall, commemorating those in our armed forces who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The local Veterans’ group work hard to support special events that offer the community time to reflect. Did you ever wonder why our kitchen is red? It was Rex Wakeling, local veteran, who suggested ‘Poppy Red’ in remembrance of the fallen.

Over the last year we have hosted talks, film screenings and community gatherings that have focused on local stories, remembrance and anniversaries. These have brought together younger residents who are learning about the past with older people who still remember stories from their own families.

The flexible halls and accessible facilities make it easy to set up displays, talks and quiet spaces for reflection, and the coffee shop area provides a friendly place to carry on conversations afterwards.

If you are part of a local history or heritage group and would like to use the Community Centre for future events, we would be delighted to hear from you.
